Knowing Our Currency

Ancient India was one of the first to issue coins and there are Indian coins dating back to the 6th century BCE. As early as the third century CE, Chanakya speaks of gold coins (Suvarnarupa), copper coins (Tamrarupa) and lead coins (Sisarupa). We have to learn the history of our currency, how it is being manufactured and what makes it valuable, even in the paper form, which was introduced at the beginning of the 20th century due to the shortage of silver during the First World War. We have also to learn the intricacies of the management of money circulation, the paths through which money gets into Government treasury, how it is again circulated among the people and such other facts. Heritage India Foundation is launching an awareness programme on the currency, its history and evolution, its paths and destinations, its management by the Government and what factors affect its value. Study of money and its management, in our economy proper and our parallel economy will make our children aware of the economic and political currents and undercurrents that determine our governance and our whole future.
